Welcome to the ECHOS Lab

Mission Statement:

In the ECHOS Lab, we explore the evolutionary foundations of behavior, cognition, and emotion and how these concepts connect humans and other species through interspecific and intraspecific relationships.

"Nevertheless the difference in mind between [hu]man
and the higher animals, great as it is, certainly is one of
degree and not of kind."

~Charles Darwin

The Evolutionary Connections of Humans and Other Species (ECHOS) Lab Group is housed in the Department of Anthropology at Boise State University. We investigate behavior, cognition, and emotion from an evolutionary lens. While we certainly begin with humans, we also consider how the evolution of communication, cooperation, and other traits connect us to other species.

We also believe that an interest in research starts early. For this reason, we encourage undergraduate participation in the lab. For students who are interested in joining the lab for elective credit, please email and Dr. Shelly Volsche will be in contact with additional steps.

We use a range of methods to answer our varied questions, including surveys, interviews, behavior observations, and much more. If you are interested in learning more about our evolutionary connections with other species, including today's human-animal interactions work, send an email to ECHOSLab@BoiseState.edu.
